Mental Health First Aid Training

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has deepened what was already a significant issue: declining mental well-being across the population. It is critical for those of us who work and volunteer with people to raise our level of awareness and capacity to be respond to those experiencing critical mental health challenges.

Courses to train you in providing trauma-informed care, for those you are in Christian ministry with.

When you complete this Mental Health First Aid training as offered by LeaderSHIFT you will be certified in the Mental Health First Aid Course of the Mental Health Commission of Canada — with the bonus of taking the program with other people of faith, with space to connect your learnings to our collective experience in Christian community. All are welcome to register.

Course leader Dr Julie Clayton is a certified MHFA teacher, a highly skilled counsellor, and holds a Master of Divinity and years of experience as a congregational pastor.

Your certification

This course is completed in three parts. Your completion of all three parts is required for certification.

  • Part One: A self-directed module that you complete online in your own time.

  • Part Two: Online group session one.

  • Part Three: Online group session two.

What You Will Learn

You will learn how to recognize signs that a person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis and encourage that person to: 

  • Talk about declines in their mental well-being 

  • Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being 

  • Reach out to these supports 

  • Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis 

  • Use MHFA actions to maintain one’s own mental well-being

A Training: For Those Who Work With Youth

Required Attendance: This course is completed in three parts. Your completion of all three parts is required for certification.

  1. Self-Directed Online Module: for you to complete in your own time during the week of July 11-18, 2022

  2. Online Group Session One: Tuesday July 19, 10am-2pm Pacific Time

  3. Online Group Session Two: Tuesday July 26, 10am-2pm Pacific Time

A Training: For Ministers, Staff & Church Volunteers in Contact with the Public

This course will be a great option for you if you are in direct contact with the public in your volunteer or paid work in the community of faith – you maybe an administrator, a custodian, choir leader, greeter, member of the pastoral care support team. Also an excellent course for you if there are friends or family members in your circle who you would like to know how to assist more effectively.

A Training: For Young Adults Who Are in Leadership with Their Peers and Youth

This will be a great opportunity to learn more about how to be a competent leader, a supportive colleague, and a friend for those in your community with mental wellbeing decline. You will learn more about your own mental wellbeing and have an important credential for your resume if you plan to work with youth in the future. This course is over two Saturdays, one week apart, and is offered specifically for participants who are 18-35 years of age.

Facilitator: Dr. Julie Clayton

Dr. Julie Clayton (BA, MTS, DMin, RCC, CCTP,CFTP) is Tipping Point’s Clinical Counsellor. Julie has worked for 25 years in community counselling and community asset-based development. She has supported clients working through a wide spectrum of life challenges. She is especially interested, however,  in supporting individuals who are emerging out of trauma and abuse. Using a collaborative, people-oriented approach, Julie will invite her clients to see new hope for their lives, utilizing both personal and therapeutic resources to achieve life change.

Julie also has an extensive teaching background, having taught communication, spiritual formation, social justice & community development at both under-graduate, graduate level and doctoral level. She offers regular seminars, workshops and group therapy, designed to support individuals in strengthening personal identity and emotional well being. Additional workshops are also offered to address issues that impact couple and family wellness, including preparation for marriage and parenting readiness.

Julie is also a certified facilitator for Mental Health First Aid Canada and is passionate about equipping people with knowledge and tools for effective mental health support.
