A Course for United Church Clergy

Re-Imagining Your Role in Faith Formation

with Rev Susan Lukey and Rev Mary Nichol

What is the purpose, or outcome, that we hope for in any faith formation endeavour?

A course designed for United Church ministry personnel seeking deeper understanding of what faith formation can be, and their unique role in it.

Clarity and Competency

While some communities of faith are able to dedicate staffing in specific ministry and leadership areas, our LeaderSHIFT team often hears that such resources are short when it comes to equipping generalist clergy with the skills necessary for faith formation leadership in their congregation - or that the resources available are focused solely to ministry with children, youth and families.

Being called to a congregation often requires ministry personnel to be responsible for many, many things ; faith formation for members of all ages is one of your responsibilities.

This course, Re-Imagining Your Role in Faith Formation, is designed for clergy who seek deeper understanding about what faith formation can be, and it’s practical applications for their own setting. Rev. Susan Lukey and Rev. Mary Nichol will address the realities of congregational ministry, and lead you in expressing clarity about and gaining competency in faith formation leadership. Both Mary and Susan are deeply rooted in The United Church of Canada, with knowledge and experience of ministry in BC and Southern Alberta.

Come consider the role you play in the important work of faith formation!

More than ever, ministry personnel in the United Church of Canada need to be clear about the process of faith formation, nurturing denomination identity, and the specific role that they - as clergy - may play in the strengthening of both within their community of faith.

Susan Lukey

The Reverend Susan Lukey, B.Ed., M.Div., Th.M, is a mother, educator, editor, and ordained minister in The United Church of Canada. Her engagement with children includes many years of teaching swimming lessons, directing church camps, leading child and youth programs, conducting children’s choirs, leadership and chaplaincy with Scouts Canada, and teaching elementary school.

Currently, she serves in full-time ministry with her husband and colleague, David Robertson, at High River United Church, High River, Alberta. Susan delights in the adventures in faith she has shared with the children, youth, and families in the High River congregation for more than 26 years.

Her greatest adventures have been shared with her two now-adult sons, who have graciously allowed some of their stories to be shared in her book and in her workshops.

Mary Nichol

Rev. Mary Nichol (she/her/hers) lives and works on the ancestral and unceded land of the Semiahmoo, sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), and Kwantlen people. She has worked with children, youth, and families for 15 years within The United Church of Canada: congregational ministry, presbytery, summer camps, and the region. Mary is equipped with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from SFU, Certificate in Educational and Liturgical Ministry from the Centre of Christian Studies and a Master of Arts in Public and Pastoral Leadership from Vancouver School of Theology.

Mary focuses on equipping and imagining with leaders in their ministry with those in the first third of life and on strengthening collegial connections, faith formation and leadership training with our regional camping ministry. Passionate about equipping leaders with the skills and knowledge to lead with authenticity and passion, Mary is committed to supporting sacred and brave space for people of all ages to ask questions, wonder, and deepen in their faith.

Mary loves to cook and shares her successes (and failures) with her household of five. She is enjoying gardening veggies and flowers, playing board games, and spending time with family and friends. One of her favourite ways to relax is to curl up on the couch with a cup of coffee and read a mystery book.
