Come together with others from local United Churches to be trained in Mental Health First Aid.

You will be trained in the recognized Mental Health First Aid course of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, by Dr Julie Clayton and Michael Collins of Tipping Point — and with the added bonus of taking the program with other people of faith.

The opportunity to connect mental health first aid learning to our experience in Christian community is profound. While medical first aid has long been understood as a necessary response to an injured person, mental health first aid is a critical life skill that everyone should acquire. Over the course of anyone’s life, it is highly likely that they will develop a mental health problem themselves, or have close contact with someone who does.

High Priority

LeaderShift is giving this training high priority across the whole of the Pacific Mountain Region in 2020 by subsidizing the training fee, and working with communities of faith to provide meeting space free of charge.

The online registration form is for all LeaderShift sponsored Mental Health First Aid course locations and dates. Select your preferred training location when registering.

Instructors

Dr Julie Clayton has been an adult educator and mental health practitioner for over 25 years.  Drawing from her academic training, her experience in pastoring numerous congregations in The Salvation Army, while also teaching in varying academic institutions, Julie brings a keen desire to help people realize their best versions of themselves.  Now operating a private counselling practice in New Westminster BC (Tipping Point Consulting & Counselling Services), Julie has been rated the top trauma therapist in the area by Psychology Today.  Julie is regularly helping people to address complex mental health problems, which are often the result of unresolved past trauma. She loves this front line work and the privilege she has to teach mental health first aid on behalf of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. She believes maximum mental health is possible for everyone, but it takes capacity to understand brain and body connections, courage to speak our personal story and conviction to master negative mental health cycles. Julie has three adult children and four grandchildren.  She enjoys swimming, playing piano, reading & researching, serving in the Downtown Eastside and supporting the ministry of a new church plant called Cross Culture Ministries BC in Burnaby, where she serves as a co-pastor in her free time.

Michael Collins

Michael Collins

Michael Collins is an experienced family and behaviour consultant, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and co-owner of Tipping Point Consulting and Counselling Services in New Westminster, BC. In this role, he used his professional training and anointed gifting to support families in managing and changing cycles of challenging behaviour and addiction. Michael is also an inspired motivational speaker who has travelled extensively throughout the world, encouraging audiences toward the Good News of the Gospel and positive life change. He is a Mental Health First Aid Facilitator and passionate about helping individuals discover how they can have a better quality of mental, physical and emotional health. He is a facilitator and trainer for Little Warriors, which is a national charitable organization committed to the awareness, prevention and treatment of childhood sexual abuse. Michael is a graduate of the BC Justice Institute in Complex Trauma and Childhood Sexual Abuse Interventions. He volunteers weekly in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver and works extensively with children and youth in foster care. Michael is known for his compassionate heart toward those who are marginalized because of their socio-economic circumstances. He is married to Niveria Collins, whom he met in his high-school square dancing class. He has four children and two grandchildren and in his spare time, can be found coaching and participating in Rugby and Mixed Martial Arts. He is also the lead pastor of the new church plant Cross Culture Ministries BC in Burnaby, BC.

Courageous, Christian, Called

Over the course of anyone’s life, it is highly likely that they will develop a mental health problem themselves or have close contact with someone who does. In Canada one person in five will experience some problem with their mental health in the course of year. In Canada, one person in three will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime.
